Doctor Who Blew my Mind!

Description

It's been over 24 Hours now. If you didn't hear about this yet, then it's your own damn fault.

So, the big twist about "The Name of The Doctor" is not about his real name, but the one who failed to live up to his chosen name; an as-yet unseen incarnation of The Doctor, played by the legendary John Hurt. This literally blew my mind. Considering how Mind-blowingly clever the episode had been up to that point, it's a marvel my brain survived the shock.

So, now we have a new incarnation of the Doctor. The Question now is; Which Doctor IS he?

Best as I can figure, there are at least three possible notions as to who this Doctor is;

1- Some Past Version of the Doctor predating his theft of the Tardis with Susan. While even I considered this, I don't think it's valid. The 11th Doctor said that Hurt's Doctor "Broke the Promise" which you can't do before you've made it. If William Hartnel's Doctor Turely is "The First Doctor" then this option is the least likely. I'm not saying it couldn't be, just that I don't think it's likely.

2- A Future Incarnation Of The Doctor: ie, The Valeyard. This is fairly likely, though I think there are some problems with this theory. Eleven's dialogue seemed to imply that what this Doctor did happened in the past, or his past at-least. He had to know that this was his secret before entering the rift. There are ways that this might still work, but we'll have to wait for the Anniversary special.

3-The Doctor between 8 and 9. I think this is the most likely. In fact, I'm going a step further and hypothesizing that this particular Doctor might have been the one who actually fought in the Time War. What else could possibly justify the Doctor rejecting him so wholy? What could the Doctor have done, asside from participating--and likely ending--the time war, that would have made an incarnation so hated? This is the only point in the Doctor's timeline where there's an opening for the appearance of an unknown incarnation. I think that this makes the most sense given how little we know right now. I might be totally wrong, but I can't wait to find out!

Here's to November 23! Happy B-day, Doctor!

Edit: SPOILERS
Night of the Doctor reveals that this is "The War Doctor", the true Ninth Doctor. If you haven't seen it, do so. Paul McGann reprises his role as the Eighth Doctor.
